Coding Prostate Procedures: TURP, Laser Enucleation, Rezūm, and UroLift
Benign prostatic hyperplasia has a growing menu of treatments, and each is a distinct, mutually exclusive code family — you pick one based on what was actually done.
The BPH treatment codes
- 52601 — transurethral resection of prostate (TURP), the classic
- 52648 — laser vaporization of prostate
- 52649 — laser enucleation (HoLEP)
- 52441 / +52442 — transprostatic implant (UroLift): first implant plus each additional
- 53854 — transurethral water vapor thermotherapy (Rezūm)
As with all transurethral work, the diagnostic cystourethroscopy is bundled — never report 52000 alongside these. UroLift is the notable case where you count devices (one base code plus an add-on per additional implant).
Prostate biopsy
Biopsy is 55700; MRI-ultrasound fusion guidance and the imaging have their own coding with defined bundling. Document the number of cores and the guidance method used.
Clinical Capture identifies which BPH family the note describes, keeps the bundled cysto off the claim, and counts UroLift implants for the add-on.
